INTRODUCTION
MAYOR JAMES GRAVEN
DEDICATION OF THE DISPLAY CASES
WILLIAM “BILL” NICKELS
Whenever you met Bill (Yes! He said please don't call me William or Mister.) He always had a smile on his face and interesting stories to tell about Olmsted Falls. Even the youngest children had responsibilities. Using a wagon, he would haul ice from Nabor's Store (corner of Columbia and Cook) to their home. When you go to Drug Mart, take a second and look up. There is a picture of Bill when he was very young with his uncle who was a gate keeper at the railroad crossing at Columbia Road.
After he served in the Navy, he was a fireman for the Olmsted Falls Volunteer Fire Department. He fought the fire when St. Mary of the Falls Church burned down in 1949. One thing he fondly recalled was that every winter the firemen would flood a pond so that residents could enjoy ice skating on it.
MRS. JOAN KASKEY JOCKE
Just as for Olmsted Falls, Mrs. Jocke was a spark plug for the Historical Society. Not only did she have suggestions for projects, but she always gave of her time to participate in the activities. For example, one Fourth of July we sold hot dogs at the Village Green. We kept going to Drug Mart to resupply our ice. It must have been the hottest day in years, yet Mrs. Jocke and her loyal volunteers manned their posts.
Sometimes we (Sunny, too!) would drop things off at her home. No matter how busy she was, she would invite me in for a few minutes. Mr. and Mrs. Jocke would be at their kitchen table and their beloved Esther (later Mr. Dumpy) would run back and forth between the two of them! Mrs. Jocke would often say, "Well, Bill, you know..." and she would begin creating a new project. One year, we made Mr. Williams' new train station into exhibits about Olmsted Falls.
These two display cases represent the love and respect that the resident of Olmsted Falls have for Mrs. Jocke and Mr. Nickels. Individual contributions were made by the citizens to express their deep felt appreciation for all that they have done for Olmsted Falls
