November 2021,
United States Army Air Corps.
Louis W. Miller (Lt., U.S. Army Air Corps) is one of the first residents to support the Historical
Society of Olmsted Falls. Over the years, he has donated many interesting iters to us. Some
of the things he has given to us are the antique red sled on the east wall (which was pictured
in the Sun Herald); a lantern which is on the table by the door; an old time school desk and
chair (with ink well); a brick from the original school on the Village Green; a map of Dover/
Olmsted 1892. Next time you are in the area, stop in and see these items.
Lt. Miller served in the Army Air Corps from August 12, 1941, to January 6, 1946. He was a
navigator on B-25's. The B-25 "Mitchell" was a two engine, medium bomber that had a crew
of five. As an instructor in the Army Air Force he taught navigation. He received his training in
San Antonio, Texas.
When I was very young, Mr. Miller taught us (me, their son John and their daughter Barbara)
the proper way to fly and fold the American flag. Every evening when he returned home from
work, he would lower their flag. He showed us how to respect and care for the flag. He also
flew the flag of the "Lone Star State". He pointed out that the proper way to fly the Texas flag
was to have the point of the star facing toward the sky.
Sometimes he would take us to the airport and point out that the more experienced the pilot,
the closer the aircraft would land to the fence.
Mr. Miller passed away on September 22, 2021.
Thank you for all that you taught us.
